Root canal treatment removes infected nerve tissue from inside a tooth, cleans and seals the canal system, and eliminates the infection causing the pain. Modern technique and proper anaesthesia make most root canals comfortable from start to finish.
What’s involved
We use the EdgeFile X7 rotary file system (motor brand — confirm before publishing) — a nickel-titanium rotary instrument that shapes canals efficiently, cleanly, and with significantly less chair time than older manual techniques. We treat simple and complex root canals, including multi-rooted molars, calcified and curved canals, and retreatments of previously treated teeth. For cases requiring precise canal mapping, we use 3D CBCT imaging before we begin.
Once the canals are cleaned and shaped, they are permanently sealed against reinfection. After treatment, the tooth requires a crown or overlay to protect it from fracturing. We plan this at the same appointment so the sequence is clear from the start.
Who it’s for
Patients with tooth pain, prolonged temperature sensitivity, swelling, or a tooth that has darkened. Patients who have been told they need a root canal and want to understand what it involves. Patients with a previously treated tooth showing signs of reinfection. Anyone who has been advised extraction when preserving the tooth may still be possible.
What to expect at your visit
The tooth is fully anaesthetised before we begin — you’ll feel pressure, not pain. Most root canals take one to two appointments of 60 to 90 minutes each. A temporary restoration is placed between visits if a second appointment is needed. At the final visit, the canals are permanently sealed and a crown or overlay is planned.

Fees vary depending on which tooth is being treated and how many canals it has. Front teeth cost less. Molars with multiple canals sit at the higher end. In almost all cases, yes. A tooth that has had a root canal is more brittle than a vital tooth and vulnerable to fracture without protection. A crown or overlay gives it the best chance of lasting long term. We plan this at the same appointment so the sequence is clear from the start.

Extraction. Removing the tooth resolves the infection but leaves a gap that affects how neighbouring teeth move and function over time. Replacing a missing tooth with an implant costs significantly more than a root canal and crown, and takes considerably longer. Where a tooth can be saved, saving it is almost always the better long-term option.
